This work draws inspiration from the coastal landscape of Izmir. During my residency, I walked along the coast, on the periphery of the city - and came across the local fishing community - a vast amount of individuals spaced out along the coastline, each with a double fishing rod tripod stand, forming a kind of informal, contemplative collective. Though each person fished alone, there was an unspoken sense of togetherness in the shared act of looking at the horizon, and waiting by the sea.
This repeated sight of people aligned in solitude, yet connected by the shared activity, became the starting point for a photographic and sculptural installation. It reflects on the way the coast brings people together, not through interaction, but through a common orientation toward the water and the horizon beyond. The act of looking out to sea is deeply personal, but also profoundly shared. Whether in Izmir or elsewhere along the Mediterranean, it is a gesture that connects us - across time, distance, and language.
