Sacred Vessels (i) (2024)

Artist-in-residence, Contextile Biennial 2024

Sacred Vessels

This two-part project explores the connection between cherished textiles and memory.

Through encounters with the local community of Guimarães, participants' cherished textile objects are shared and transformed into vessels of memory and storytelling, becoming touch-points for uncovering both individual and collective experiences.

The work is inspired by the unique setting of the residency: a former convent and hospital, its sacristy - a space for sacred objects and vestments, and its link to a neighbouring elderly home (Santa Casa da Misericórdia).

Sacred Vessels (Walking Frame: Natividade Seixeira)

walking frame, photographic digital print on satin

Central to the project is a touching encounter with Mrs. Natividade, a resident at Santa Casa da Misericórdia, who shared a delicate, intricate embroidery piece she made when she was 12 years old, which always accompanies her in her handbag. This touching encounter was the source of inspiration for the creation of a sculptural photographic-textile installation featuring a walking frame, a common support object in hospitals and care homes. The frame is draped with printed photographs of Mrs. Natividade, a closer depiction of the intricate piece of embroidery, and other objects she created in her life, which she holds dear and tells her story.

Touch is a central theme, visually in the photographs, conceptually, and physically. The walking frame is transformed from a functional object into a mobile artwork that highlights both her story and the broader theme of memory and touch as a source of support. The photograph depicting an upscaled image of the embroidery work, positioned at the front of the frame like a shield or armour, symbolises personal creativity and resilience. The work invites the audience to connect with the personal histories that carry one forward.
